What is differences between the R129 and R44 children car seats?

Classification basis car seat

R44 car seats are categorized based on the child's weight, divided into five predefined weight groups (Group 0 to Group 3).

R129 (i-Size) car seats are classified based on the child's height, eliminating the weight-based groups, which simplifies the selection process for parents.

Rear-facing car seat requirement

R44 allows children to face forward from as young as 9 kg, regardless of age.

R129 mandates that children remain rear-facing until at least 15 months old and a minimum height of 76 cm, promoting extended rear-facing travel for enhanced safety.

Testing standards

R44 primarily includes frontal impact testing, with no mandatory side-impact testing.

R129 includes additional side-impact testing, which is crucial since side impacts account for a significant percentage of collisions. It also uses advanced crash test dummies (Q dummies with 32 sensors) compared to R44’s P dummies (4 sensors) for more accurate simulations of a child's body during crashes.

ISOFIX and installation

R44 does not have specific requirements for ISOFIX installation and can vary in width without restrictions.

R129 requires ISOFIX installation for many models and limits the width of seats to 44 cm to facilitate fitting three seats across the back of a car.

Safety features

R44 lacks comprehensive side-impact protection measures.

R129 all car seats must pass side-impact tests, which enhances head and neck protection for children.

Types of kids car seats

Rear facing baby car seats (Group 0 and 0+)

0 - 13 kg (up to approximately 12-15 months). These seats are designed for infants and provide optimal protection for their head and neck. They should be used until the child reaches the maximum weight or height limit specified by the manufacturer.

Combination car seats for newborn baby and infant (Group 0+/1)

0 - 18 kg (birth to approximately 4 years). These seats can be used both rearward-facing and forward-facing, accommodating infants and toddlers as they grow.

Forward-facing child car seats (Group 1)

9 - 18 kg (approximately 9 months to 4 years). Designed for toddlers who have outgrown their rear facing car seats, these seats provide a harness system to secure the child.

High-backed booster car Seats (Group 2 and 3)

15 - 36 kg (approximately 4 to 11 years). These seats elevate the child to ensure the vehicle's seat belt fits correctly across their shoulder and lap.

Booster cushions (Group 3)

22 - 36 kg (approximately 6 to 11 years). These are backless boosters that raise the child to allow the seat belt to fit properly. However, new regulations restrict the use of backless boosters for children under 125 cm tall or weighing less than 22 kg.
